Yes, it is a lot of money but those girls have trained long and hard to to a GREAT job. I've just been to the cat parlour and paid over £100 to have my fur trimmed (no rude commments please) and my stripes put back into true Bag glory. It is a HIGHLY skilled thing - not all pianists CAN accompany! So I'm with Steve here - and if he does a good job people won't begrudge the fee and will go back the next time they need someone. I would find it quite upsetting, insulting even if anyone suggested I should NOT charge for accompanying. Generally speaking my higher grades only need one run through as I always go through tricky entries/any weird bits with them in some form even if I can't manage it all (Hindemith is NOT my idea of a stroll on the piano for example).

I have a 2 or 3 colleagues I approach to look after my upper grades (assuming I can't get my fingers round the music myself, plus I think there comes a time when it is GOOD for them to work with someone else) and individual pupes can expect in those circumstances to pay between £50 and £100 all in. So if someone were to do grade 8 they would be paying over £100 for your service as an acoompanist.

To you accompanists out there, the huge advantage of my approach is this: every time the exam boards put up their fees, my wages go up as well. Mind, I am stunningly good, so that helps.
